I left a previous review about how great the bar staff were (and that still stands!) but now that I am home, I can give a more fulsome review. Some of the people commenting on here seem to be far too critical. That said, it's not a 5 star either. Hospitality: Someone mentioned in a previous review that the wait staff seem 'sad.' I find that to be ridiculous. They are very young and English is not their first language. Some seemed to be 13-14 years old. To judge young hard-working kids so harshly is ridiculous. They are very attentive to guests and do the same you'd expect from any server in Canada or the US. Pool: We had a blast, as did our son, but my only concern was the pool is not shocked. When you have that many people in and out all day you have to keep chlorinating the water and treating it. I didn't see this happen once over my 1 week stay and we were at the pool constantly. Personally, if I can't smell the chlorine, the pool isn't clean. Rooms: Not fancy 5-star rooms, but not cheap roadway motel rooms either. Everything was in working order and the room was cleaned consistently the entire time of our stay. Yes, they are a little dated and could use some renovation, but it sufficed. Our room had a small flooding issue the first night we used the shower. It seemed the drain was clogged. We soaked it up with towels and called front desk. They had it cleaned up, brought new towels, and had a maintenance guy fix the drain within the hour. Food: Food was very good in terms of quality. Every day, you can get quesadillas, nachos, or burgers at the bar. The main food hall/buffet had pancakes, cereal, bacon, sausage, eggs, & hashbrowns for breakfast. Pastas for lunch, and things like chicken, ribs, fish, etc. for dinner. I wouldn't say there was a ton of choices, but there was certainly always enough to eat and the quality was good. A MAJOR con for me was how far the resort is from the airport. It's a 2.5-hour drive and after travelling all day this is just not ideal. That said, once we arrived we were happy and got on with our vacation. A pro would be how intimate and quaint the resort is overall. Some days we had the entire pool deck to ourselves nearly. It's a safe, quiet, lowkey resort. If you're travelling as a couple or with your kids, this is ideal. If you're travelling with a group of friends and are looking for more entertainment value, not so much. We had a great week and enjoyed the resort/our time there. The reality is that this is a 3.5 star vacation. If you're fine with that and go in knowing that, you'll be fine. I hope this helps.

Be armed to deal with contentious or sneaky management. The night that we arrived we were told that the beach front Vila we paid for had an electrical issue needing repair. Instead we were forced to take a vila quite some distance away that literally smells like sewage. When we were supposed to move into our beachfront Villa the next morning we were told to leave our luggage at the desk and wait until 3pm (check in time). What we discovered in hindsight was that there was no electrical issue with the Villa we had paid for. Rather they had put another couple in there as a means of rectifying some other issue. The front desk worker (Oswald had lied to us. After a number of attempts and loosing the entire morning the Onsite manager (Hugo) discovered what was going on and stepped up providing us with a larger upgraded beachfront Villa in apology of the big inconvenience. Jason and a couple of other staff member were very helpful in facilitating this. 2 hours later Oswald and the General Manager (Farida) marched over and quite aggressively insisted we would not be staying in the upgraded Villa as they had another customer designated to it. We told her that at this point we have not been able to fully enjoy 2 days out of our 5 day stay and therefore would not be moving without considerable restitution. They could not offer anything suitable. We stayed in the upgraded Villa (while Farida was extremely unpleasant and a very unprofessional manager). There after our stay was terrific. Wendy and Larry at the excursions counter past the ReMax office (on the AZURA hotel side of the resort) were very helpful at offering activity options. We highly recommend doing the 3 hour ATV tour. Giovanni was another representative that was very helpful in ensuring we were happy with our stay. The resort is very quiet and low key. It isnt a big party sceen. But if you are with a group you could make it into what you want. The beach is beautiful. The sand is darker but very soft which leaves a shore line you can not see through. It is still an excellent beach though. Service at the pool bar tends to be a little slow paced but they are polite and grill up an awesome burger. Although the selection at the buffet is not extensive, the quality is excellent. Most meals consited of Brown rice, 2 different styles of chicken, fish or pork chops, steamed vegetables, and usually some type of beef variety. Every day was slightly different though. If you reserve in advanced (at the activities counter beside ReMax on the AZURA side then you can have a meal at the Japanese, or Italian restaurant. We would recommend a vacation at the Villas Playa Samara resort or AZURA Resort AS LONG AS you are prepared to advocate for yourself and not be bullied by the General Manager. I would recommend calling the desk 24 hours in advanced to ensure they have your Villa set aside for you. Otherwise you could arrive to discover they have put someone else in the Villa you pre paid for

We returned last night from our week stay at Hotel Villa Playa Samara. It was a girl’s trip for my 60th birthday. The drive from the airport was 3 hours. The last hour of the drive is on a very windy road and it was dark so a little bit of a nail biter. First impression entering into the lobby was great. We had to pay a $200 deposit which we felt was a little strange as usually they just take your credit card to have on file. The walkways to our villa was very dark and all week we ended up using the flashlight on our phones at night. Some quests had brought flashlights which was a good idea. There were 4 of us and we had booked two rooms with two queen beds. Opening the door to our room, there were no ooh’s and ahh’s, there was more of a oh no! We had one queen bed. There were no night stands, there was not a chair to sit on, there was not a dresser. There was a tv on the wall and a long table. There was a small empty bar fridge. There was a small closet, no hangers. One side had four wire racks and the other side had a small hanging bar for clothes. The safe (which did not work) was also in the closet. No coffee maker and our fridge was never filled. Back to check- in. I was told I had “requested” two queen beds and they did not have to honour the request. I asked for another room. Not available. The front desk staff were extremely rude and after a full day of travel, I didn’t request, I demanded a second bed, not a cot, a bed. A twin bed was eventually brought. We did not have hot water for 5 of the seven nights. The last two nights we either had scalding hot water or cold. The other two women had a king bed and they decided they would be okay. I had chosen this resort and was feeling extremely bad that three friends had paid for this resort which was obviously not what we expected. Bottled water was not given out. We were told the entire resort was on a filtered water system. There was no phone in our rooms so thankfully there was no medical emergency. We also did not have a smoke detector in our room and apparently none of the Villa’s did. The food was okay. The buffet was small and there were five heated dishes, fruit, salad, soup and a few desserts. We didn’t go hungry, but if you are looking for gourmet meals, this is not the resort. The bar closes at 10pm. The grounds were beautiful, the pool was clean, the beach was beautiful. The wait staff were wonderful. I did read the reviews before booking, and regret not taking them to heart as they are true. When we spoke to other guests there were many other issues, such as patio doors not locking on ground floor Villa’s, mold in rooms, no towels in rooms and it goes on. The sister hotel, the Azura seemed to be a bit better but also had issues. This entire resort has so much potential as the grounds and scenery are beautiful, but the rooms are worn and need upgrading. A few simple things like stocking the fridge, a coffee maker, a chair in the room, night tables would be an improvem

We booked a week last minute and are so glad that we did! The location near Samara was two hours from Liberia airport, and the shuttle was well organized and efficient. The atmosphere at the resort was laid-back, relaxing, and natural. The beach was beautiful with pelicans diving in the water beside us, and a mix of vacationers and locals hanging out. Great vibe! We love Costa Rica for the nature and were not disappointed here. In addition to the pelicans, we had birds eating from our hands, and saw both green and black iguanas, among other beautiful animals. The pool with swim-up bar was very nice; and the rooms were comfortable with good water, pressure and air-conditioning. This is a small resort so very easy to get around. The buffet was small, fresh, and tasty. We also enjoyed two à la carte restaurants at the adjacent resort. We were very satisfied with both the food and drinks. The resort is located about 30 minute beach walk to the town of Samara. Great place to hang out for the day to do some shopping, and enjoy a meal. The resort team was friendly and knowledgable. We would particularly like to call out David in the restaurant, Oscar in the bars, and Larry in customer service. All of these guys went above and beyond and made our trip even better! This resort was excellent value. We enjoyed it very much, and hope to return one day!.
