There are different spaces to rent at Bissick Old Mill - We stayed in the Mill Retreat. Liked · We stayed here for 6 nights during our travels around England and although our initial impressions of the Mill Retreat were good, things changed quickly. There was an overwhelming floral smell throughout the rental space so we immediately located and unplugged 2 plug-in room deodorizers - one was in the main living space and the other in the kitchen - but unfortunately that's when things started to go downhill (see below). This rental offering has some very nice features and has great potential if things here could be dried out. The main living area is spacious, well furnished and very functional. The bathroom is great - it's a good size, well equipped with dual stands on each side of the sink, and the shower was very good. The kitchen is set up well, is a good size, and has everything you need. There was a dehumidifier running 24/7 during our stay - which we had to empty of 8+litres of water when it stopped running - which definitely helped lessen the dampness. Disliked · Unplugging the room deodorizers mentioned above unveiled the hidden problems lurking here...an overwhelming and unbearable stench of mustiness, mildew and mould in every room of the rental unit. We discovered mould on the underside of the shower anti-slip mat. When I tried to do a load of laundry (there is a washing machine in the kitchen here which was one of the main reasons I selected this unit to rent) the rubber seal of the washing machine was coated in mildew, mould and a rusty slime from a rusted metal loop that I found sitting in a pool of water at the bottom of the rubber seal. The drum of the washing machine was clean so I chanced doing a load of laundry because we were in dire need of some clean clothes - but this was a big mistake - all of the clothes from that load of laundry stunk like mould for the remaining 2.5 weeks of our holiday. Using strong room deodorizers and a dehumidifier won't address an ongoing, long term problem of the dampness, coolness and mustiness at the Mill Retreat - and I question what serious health concerns people might develop from staying here.

Quiet village location, gourmet restaurant/pub next door. Ample parking just outside the door. Stayed in room #1, in oldest part of this 1600s building, with thick walls and ensuite shower. Fresh milk for your tea/coffee and small fridge provided. Within easy reach of both northern and southern Cornish coasts, we found it ideal for exploring. We were lucky with the weather, but if (when) it rains, there is a cosy common room available. Amiable hosts. Would stay again.
