Its story dates back to 1930: designed by the architectural firm Harshend & Co. and constructed by Yang Ruiji Construction Factory, it first opened its doors as the China Hotel. It quickly emerged as an upscale social hub frequented by the elite of old Shanghai and, during pivotal historical periods, witnessed momentous events that left indelible marks in history.After over half a century of transformations and operating under various guises, the building was designated as a Shanghai Excellent Historical Building in the fourth batch of listings in 2005.
